Ultra Electronics stock predictions

Ultra Electronics stock predictions : Gloom pervades the global defence sector because major players such as the US and UK are going to rein in spending over the next few years. But Questor thinks the sector de-rating has been overdone – especially for the smaller players in the specialist technology space.

One such player is Ultra Electronics. The FTSE 250 niche player specialises in electronics and software for the defence, security, transport and energy markets. The company was formed by a management buy-out of the Dowty Group's defence and aerospace businesses in 1993.

The business has expanded by acquisition and today consists of 24 businesses operating in over 150 niche specialist capability areas. These niche areas can be split into six broad categories: battlespace IT; sonar systems; civil transport and energy equipment; specialist equipment for defence and security applications; and systems for civil and military aircraft.

One of the growing areas in which the company operates is the so-called C4ISR – which stands for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. It is also involved in anti-submarine electronics, also a growth area.

More than half of the group's revenues comes from the US. With 27pc in the UK, 9pc from mainland Europe and 11pc from the growth markets of the Middle East and Asia.

About 18pc of its total business is in sonar systems and 40pc in battlespace IT. Civil aircraft equipment accounts for 7pc of revenues and military aircraft 10pc. Equipment not related to the military accounts for 13pc of the group.

As an investor, you will be familiar with the phrase "past performance is no guide to future returns" that forms part of the legal disclaimers included in marketing and advertising around funds and other investments.

There is some truth to this – but only a little. If someone or something has a great track record in an area of business, it should inspire confidence about their performance in the future.

The past financial performance of Ultra Electronics is not only worthy of note, it is impressive. Over the last five years the group has shown a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) in earnings per share of 16pc.

The total shareholder return, which includes share price rise and dividend payments, has a CAGR of 17pc since the company listed in 1996. In the current year, earnings per share are forecast to rise 11pc, with pre-tax profits up 23pc.

The group's balance sheet is robust, with net cash – so more bolt-on acquisitions are likely. The group has a track record of making sensible strategic purchases work.

The shares are yielding 2.3pc trading on a December 2011 earnings multiple of 14, falling to 13.2 next year. Questor thinks that this rating is too low and the shares deserve to trade at a higher multiple. Once investors realise that the defence sector has not fallen off a cliff a re-rating should be in prospect.

Bank of America Stock Predictions 2011

Bank of America Stock Predictions 2011 : Bank of America is one of the leading financial institutions in the U.S. and provides a range of products and services like credit cards, mortgages, auto loans, commercial loans, investment banking services and wealth management. It competes with JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, UBS and Wells Fargo. In this article, we try to gauge the maximum possible impact of the proposed regulatory changes on our near $15 price estimate for Bank of America’s stock.

stock saw a high of $15.25 during the second week of January this year and has since shed nearly a third of its value to around $10.30 recently. Much of the pessimism surrounds regulatory uncertainty due to concerns of tighter regulation and more stringent capital rules.

Corporate and commercial banking is the largest business division for Bank of America contributing about 33% of the company’s value in our analysis. Slow economic growth has reduced the demand for commercial banking loans, which accounts for nearly a third of all loans outstanding for Bank of America.

We currently expect a moderate increase in Bank of America’s outstanding business loans figure because of its strong cash position and wide network of corporate clients.

However, higher capital requirements could hamper the growth of available funds from the bank. Slower economic growth would also make businesses and commercial establishments more reluctant to borrow, and the combined effect would reduce the growth in the total business loans outstanding.

To stimulate demand, the bank could resort to promotional and pricing tactics that would weigh on margins and such a scenario could weigh on margins going forward. This scenario could reduce our estimates for the corporate and commercial banking operating margins from 56% at the end of our forecast period to about 45% and represent a 10% decline in our price estimate for Bank of America.

Bank of America has a large exposure to the struggling mortgage market which is a point of concern for many investors. In 2010, the total value of the company’s mortgage loans outstanding was about $186 billion which could drop to about $90 billion if we factor in the concerns about a slow economic recovery and weak mortgage loan growth.

Also, Bank of America could register heavy losses because of widespread mortgage defaults causing the bank to report negative operating margin similar to its 2009 level of -57% for 2011 and 2012. This scenario would imply a 5% decline in our price estimate for Bank of America.

Still Upside to Shares

In the scenarios highlighted about, we looked at how regulatory uncertainties and a sluggish recovery in the mortgage market could contribute around to around 15% downside to our price estimates. Our bearish scenario indicates a stock value of around $13 and so the near $10 market price today looks overdone and patient investors would do well to give Bank of America another look. collins foods group prospectus, Collins Foods prices IPO at bottom of range

collins foods group prospectus, Collins Foods prices IPO at bottom of range : Australian fast-food group Collins Foods, owned by buyout firm Pacific Equity Partners, has priced its initial public offering at the bottom of the planned range, two sources said, raising A$201.8 million, but that still makes it the largest IPO in the local market this year.

Collins Foods will offer 80.7 million shares at a price of A$2.50 per share, the bottom of the range between A$2.50 to A$2.92, the two sources familiar with the deal told Reuters. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter is not public yet. Pacific Equity Partners declined to comment.

The price implies a multiple of nine times earnings and the bookbuild met with solid support from local and Asian institutional investors, one of the sources said. The prospectus is due to be lodged later on Friday.

Collins Foods is the country's largest KFC franchisee and owns all 119 KFC outlets in the state of Queensland, as well as 85 Sizzler restaurants around Australia and Asia, according to its web site.

There has been a drought in Australian share offerings due to soft equity markets, with two floats pulled last month and no IPOs worth more than A$100 million reaching the market.

Financial Planning Tips for Working Caregivers

Financial Planning Tips for Working Caregivers ; Research Shows Working American Caregivers Lose Lifetime Average of $304,000 in Wages, Pensions and Social Security Benefits -- Free Resource Helps Americans Navigate Work and Caregiving Responsibilities

The MetLife Mature Market Institute has released a publication, "Planning Tips: Financial Considerations for Family Caregivers," to help the many Americans who lose a considerable amount of money when they take time from their jobs to care for their aging parents and also spend a good deal of their own funds to do so. A recent study, "The MetLife Study of Caregiving Costs to Working Caregivers: Double Jeopardy for Baby Boomers Caring for Their Parents," found that the 10 million employed caregivers in the U.S. lose an estimated $3 trillion in wages, pensions and social security benefits over a lifetime if they leave the workforce prematurely; the average losses are $304,000 per person. That does not include additional out-of-pocket expenses related to caregiving, such as travel costs, contributing to the parents' household and purchasing items needed by the care recipient.

Here is a synopsis of the tips:
-- Think twice about leaving your job to provide care, as it will impact your lifetime wealth and future employment prospects -- In addition to losing a paycheck, you could also be missing out on years of service required to become vested in a defined benefits pension plan, to receive matching 401(k) funds or to build Social Security benefits.

Check with your employer to determine what benefits are offered, and how you would replace them, should you curtail your employment
Your employer may be able to provide workplace accommodations--such as flex-time or family and medical leave (FMLA)--so you can stay in the workplace while caring for your relative.

Take stock of what you have and your expenses for caregiving
Consider your current costs for travel, home care and any other items that you cover. Add up all your current out-of-pocket costs for caregiving and create a budget for these expenses.

Look into public benefits
Community services may be available for low cost or no cost and can offset out-of-pocket expenses. The Web site, www.BenefitsCheckup.org , offers free, confidential service that can help older adults find programs to help pay for some of the costs associated with prescription drugs, health care, utilities and other essentials.

Become knowledgeable about Medicare and Medicaid
Medicare is not all-inclusive and you will want to be aware of costs for premiums and deductibles. Some enrolled in Medicare may also qualify for Medicaid which covers a range of health and long-term care services.

Calculate what it would cost to keep your loved one at home
There are many resources to enable an older person to age in place with additional services such as meals-on-wheels, adult day services and home modification.

Consider enlisting a geriatric care manager
Geriatric care managers are usually social workers or nurses who assist with evaluation, referral and monitoring a plan of care for older persons.

Be aware of possible elder financial abuse
Older individuals, especially those with physical or cognitive impairments can be vulnerable to exploitation which may deplete one's savings.

Discuss your loved one's legal, financial, and medical wishes
Investigate Power of Attorney, Durable Power of Attorney and a Living Will.

Create a budget for your own future retirement expenses
Consider what portion of your income you'll need to maintain your current lifestyle after retirement; experts typically place it at about 80% of current income.

The Planning Tips publication also contains an annotated list of resources for caregivers to find help, including: BenefitsCheckUp.org, Administration on Aging (AOA), the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of Labor, Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA), Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER) and the Insurance Information Institute.

way to end up with US$1mil in the stock market

way to end up with US$1mil in the stock market ; in good markets and bad, investors invariably find ways to reduce the value of their holdings by doing stupid things. But two new personal finance books are intended to keep you from becoming part of the punch line.

The one that offers the most specific advice, in addition to being more entertaining, is by LouAnn Lofton, managing editor for online content at Fool.com, the Web site of the Motley Fool, the financial education company that also offers its own mutual funds. She argues that investors need to do research, be realistic, think long term and learn from mistakes. But that would make an awkward title, so Lofton calls her book Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl: And Why You Should, Too (Harper Business, US$25.99).

Lofton begins by reviewing well-publicised research showing that when it comes to investing, women are far better than men at getting out of their own way. She dissects those studies and provides explanations – she calls them “the eight essential principles every investor needs to create a profitable portfolio” – of why she agrees that this is the case.

Here are her conclusions: Women trade less than men, so their transaction costs are less – and lower transaction costs mean greater returns. Women exhibit less overconfidence. (Men think they know more than they do, while women are more likely to know what they don’t know.) Women also shun risk, are more realistic, do more research, are more immune to peer pressure, learn from their errors and are less prone to taking extreme actions.

Lofton points out the benefits of each principle – for example, the less you know about an industry in which a company competes, the greater your chances of being surprised if you hold the company’s shares.

Then, to explain her title, she argues that Buffett has used these same eight rules to amass his fortune. For example, he doesn’t trade excessively. He also does extensive homework before he buys, is fond of saying his favourite holding period “is forever” and avoids investing in areas like technology that he says he does not understand.

The description of his investment style is a bit simplistic, of course. Not all of us can buy billions of dollars worth of a company’s shares, sometimes getting very favourable terms in return. For example, the US$5bil worth of preferred shares of Goldman Sachs that Buffett bought in 2008 paid 10% a year in interest.

That option wasn’t available to the average mutual fund investor.

Still, the idea of using Buffett as the symbol for her investing approach is effective.

There seems to be a (probably misplaced) rule in publishing that no one will take a personal finance book seriously if it has fewer than 40,000 words. This book rounds out its simple, clear and relatively short argument with four interviews with fund managers who share the author’s beliefs, and includes an ode to the joys of compound interest, none of which seem to be needed. And the book finds several ways of reprising its eight rules. That grows tiresome after a while – explaining the principles twice would have been just fine.

Saudi Basic Industries Corp (Sabic) net profit second-quarter 2011

Saudi Basic Industries Corp (Sabic) net profit second-quarter 2011 : Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (2010.SA), or Sabic, the Middle East's largest listed company, said Saturday its second-quarter net profit surged 61% to 8.1 billion Saudi riyals ($2.2 billion) on increased production and sales, driven by a recovery in demand and low raw materials costs.

The result was well above analyst expectations at Credit Suisse and Riyadh- based NCB Capital, which had expected Sabic to post a second-quarter net profit of SAR7.16 billion and SAR7.69 billion respectively.

First-half earnings per share came in at SAR5.26, compared with SAR3.48 a year earlier, the plastics, chemicals and metals company said in a statement posted on the Saudi bourse website.

Sabic attributed the rise in quarterly profit to an increase in production and sales volumes as well as an improvement in prices for most of the products.

But news of the FBI investigation yesterday is likely to spark a downward trend for a while – shares have already fallen, closing down 2.26 per cent yesterday at $15.99.

As the political pressure continues to mount in the US, the possibility of Murdoch being ousted, however slight, continues to rise. And this presents a very interesting prospect for the canny investor.

News Corp has always traded at a considerable discount to its peers, partly due to the perception – largely accurate – that it is a firm run on the whims of a single man. It’s known as the Murdoch discount.

Since the latest tidal wave of revelations centering around News International, this discount has risen to around 30 per cent – making the group’s value far less than if someone decided to break it up and sell the constituent parts.

The lion’s share of News Corp’s operating profits come from its US cable networks business, which is worth at least $30bn. Its TV and movie studios business is worth another $12bn, which already takes you to its current market cap.

Throw in its 39 per cent holding in Sky, and other stakes including in privately held Sky Italia, and you have close to $20bn more, before even look at the value of the UK newspaper business that caused all the trouble in the first place (which is just about balanced out if you strip away News Corp’s $4bn debt).

Its operations in China have been stripped back significantly in the last 12 months but its Indian ventures have good growth prospects.
